Brighton 2-1 Wigan: Glenn Murray and Solly March goals seal Premier League promotion for Chris Hughton's men

Brighton's chairman Tony Bloom allowed the grin to spread across his face and started whirling his blue-and-white scarf around his head in the front row of the directors' box, high up in the Gods of the main stand. Moments later he was down in its lower tier, bouncing along with his players, many of whom had been stripped of their kit by the pitch invaders, and joining the communal choir for a version of Neil Diamond's 'Sweet Caroline'. Next Bloom, the notoriously shy force behind Brighton's transformation, had a microphone in his hand, connecting with his people through the public address system.

'This feels amazing,' beamed the chairman. 'To be here at the Amex, with 30,000 Brighton fans, it's our dreams come true. Twenty years ago we were homeless and going nowhere and here we are on our way to the Premier League.' Indeed they are. Less than three hours later, Jacob Butterfield's 88th minute equaliser for Derby against Huddersfield confirmed promotion for Brighton, wiping out the chance of a mathematical freak. Thousands had stayed behind at the Amex to watch the game on the big screens and the celebrations reached a new level when Butterfield scored. Even Chris Hughton was happy to relax and accept congratulations.
